A Guide on How to Start Going to Therapy

Embarking on the journey of therapy is a courageous decision that can lead to transformative personal growth and emotional well-being. Whether you're facing specific challenges or simply seeking growth, starting therapy is a proactive step toward a healthier, more balanced life. Here's a guide to help you navigate the initial steps.

1. Acknowledge the Need:

The first and perhaps most crucial step is recognizing that seeking therapy is a positive and empowering choice. Whether you're grappling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or life transitions, acknowledging the need for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. It’s totally okay to ask for help.

One of our favorite quotes is

“Anything that is human is mentionable,

and anything that is mentionable is manageable.”

-Fred Rogers

2. Reflect:

Before diving in, take the time to reflect on what you’re looking for in your therapy experience. Would you rather have a male or female counselor? Would you want them to use different therapy modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), EMDR, or EFT? Would you want your therapist to incorporate the Enneagram in your time together?

Taking the time to reflect can help narrow down your search for a new counselor.

3. Find the Right Therapist:

Selecting the right therapist can feel daunting. Know that every therapist is trained to work with every type of person. When searching, consider factors such as their specialization, experience, and approach.

You can read about each therapist at Rivertown Wellness on our team page. Each therapist lists their specialities, availability, and a short summary of their experience.

If you’d prefer to talk through your options, you can call our office and we can help suggest a therapist for you.

4. Overcome Stigma:

Despite increasing awareness, there can still be lingering stigma around seeking therapy. Remind yourself that taking care of your mental health is as important as caring for your physical well-being. Embrace the decision with pride and focus on the positive impact it can have on your life. Reach out to friends and family who you know are seeking counseling for themselves.

5. Set Realistic Expectations:

Therapy is a process that unfolds over time, and progress may not always be linear. Set realistic expectations and be patient with yourself! Understand that building a trusting relationship with your therapist takes time, and healing is a gradual journey. It may help to work with your therapist to set goals for your time together.

6. Schedule Regular Appointments:

Commitment is key to the success of therapy. Based on your therapist’s recommendations, schedule regular appointments and prioritize them as you would any other important aspect of your life. Consistency allows for a deeper exploration of issues and facilitates meaningful progress.

It’s also important to meet with a counselor in a location that’s convenient for you. At Rivertown Wellness, we have three offices across Cincinnati - West Chester, Hyde Park, and College Hill. All of our therapists also offer Telehealth appointments when it’s most convenient for you.

Take the First Step

Taking the initial steps toward therapy is a powerful act of self-care. By acknowledging the need, educating yourself, finding the right therapist, overcoming stigma, setting realistic expectations, and committing to the process, you pave the way for a transformative and enriching counseling experience. Remember, seeking help is a strength, and your journey toward healing is a testament to your resilience and commitment to well-being.
